One-bedroom rentals for a Greenville Zoo weekend

The Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail passing through Cleveland Park near the Greenville Zoo entrance on Cleveland Park Drive

If you're coming to Greenville for the zoo and want a one-bedroom to yourselves, we have four in the city: Cozy 1BR in Multi-unit building, 1BR Stylish Suite Near DT, Amazing quiet 1BR with all you need, 1BR Fully Handicap Accessible Near Downtown, and 1BR with Picnic Area & Fire Pit. Three of them sleep two. One sleeps three. That last number is the whole decision for most families reading this, so start there.

The zoo itself sits at 150 Cleveland Park Drive, inside Cleveland Park, with a free lot and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail running right past it. Head south on the trail and you're at Falls Park and the downtown end of Main Street inside a mile or so. Most families are through the zoo in an hour to an hour and a half, which is the detail nobody tells you when you're booking: you are not planning a zoo day, you are planning a Cleveland Park morning with a long afternoon attached to it.

The one that takes three people

1BR with Picnic Area & Fire Pit is the only one-bedroom in the Greenville portfolio with an occupancy of three, and it is set up for the third person being small: children's dinnerware is in the cupboards, there are board games and books on the shelf, and outside the triplex there's a picnic area, outdoor dining and a fire pit. It sits minutes from the Cherrydale shopping area, which matters more than it sounds when you've got a toddler and have forgotten the one thing you needed.

The picnic table is the part guests actually use. A zoo morning tends to end with everyone slightly sticky and not ready to sit in a restaurant, and eating outside at the apartment solves that evening without anybody negotiating. Laundry is free on site, which is the amenity parents notice on day two.

Two people, and three ways to do it

For a couple, the choice between the other three comes down to what you want the apartment to be when you're not at the zoo.

  • Amazing quiet 1BR with all you need is the quiet one in name and in guest reports: it holds the highest rating of the four, across sixty-six reviews. Blackout curtains in the bedroom, outdoor seating, a blender if you're the sort who makes something before an early start. Walking distance to Mountain Goat cafe.
  • Cozy 1BR in Multi-unit building has the longest track record of the one-bedrooms, with well over a hundred reviews behind it, and keeps board games and books on hand for a rained-off afternoon. Also within walking distance of Mountain Goat.
  • 1BR Fully Handicap Accessible Near Downtown is built flat: a small four-inch ramp at the front door, one level inside, a walk-in or wheel-in shower, and safety bars through the bathroom. Mountain Goat is within walking or wheeling distance.

That last one deserves more than a bullet, because accessible one-bedrooms are genuinely hard to find and most listings that claim it mean a wide doorway and nothing else. Cleveland Park's paths and the Swamp Rabbit Trail are flat and paved, so a visitor using a wheelchair can realistically do the zoo, the park and the trail stretch toward Falls Park in one outing. If that's your trip, book this one and don't spend the evening cross-referencing photographs of thresholds.

What they all share, and why it changes the weekend

Every one of the four is a one-bathroom apartment with a full kitchen behind it: oven, stove, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, cooking basics, a dining table, wine glasses. There's a washer and dryer in each, free parking, and a coffee station with a dual Keurig and drip maker, which is the detail Plenteous guests mention most and the one that gets you out the door before the zoo lot fills.

The practical effect of a kitchen is that you can eat one real meal a day at home and spend the other one properly. Greenville is a serious restaurant town and the good tables cluster around Falls Park: Passerelle Bistro sits at the base of Liberty Bridge by the Reedy, Jianna does wood-fired pizza and housemade pasta from the floor above the park with a rooftop bar, The Lazy Goat on Riverplace works best if you order a stack of small plates and share them, and Soby's has been the downtown Southern standby for years. Breakfast at the apartment, dinner at one of those, and the zoo weekend costs what a zoo weekend should.

Each also has a dedicated workspace, which is why these apartments get booked by people in town for work as often as by weekenders. Two of them, Amazing quiet 1BR with all you need and 1BR with Picnic Area & Fire Pit, allow long-term stays.

Bringing the dog

All four one-bedrooms accept pets, and so does every Greenville home in our portfolio. Confirm the current pet terms when you book, since those can change.

Greenville rewards a dog more than most cities this size. The Swamp Rabbit Trail is the spine of it: you can pick it up at Cleveland Park and walk south toward Falls Park, or go the other way and keep going. Unity Park, a short walk from Falls Park, has a splash pad and a big open grassy stretch. The zoo is the one place the dog isn't coming, so plan around the fact that a visit runs roughly an hour and a half: one of you can walk the trail loop while the other takes the kids in, and nobody waits in a hot car.

When one bedroom isn't enough

If your zoo trip is actually two families, the arithmetic changes and a one-bedroom stops making sense. 3BR 2B with Fenced Back Yard sleeps seven and the fenced yard is the reason people with dogs book it. 2BR Retreat near Swamp Rabbit sleeps five and is set up for people who intend to walk or bike the trail rather than drive everywhere. For a bigger group, 5BR 4B Huge Space with 2 Level Game Barn sleeps twelve and has a heated and air-conditioned two-storey barn out back with ping pong, a TV and bean bag chairs, which handles the hours between the zoo and dinner better than any living room will.

It's worth saying plainly: five people in a one-bedroom is a bad weekend regardless of how good the apartment is. The occupancy numbers on these listings are not aspirational.

Booking, and the two things to check first

Book direct with Plenteous and you're dealing with the people who manage the homes, which means a real answer when you text about a late arrival. Arrival is self check-in with keypad entry on our homes, so an evening drive in doesn't need to be coordinated with anyone.

Before you commit, settle two things. First, occupancy: count everyone, including the child who technically doesn't need a bed, and match it to the listed number rather than hoping. Second, dates and current rates, since nightly pricing, minimum stays and fees move with the season and with what's on downtown. Greenville fills up around Fluor Field game nights and festival weekends, and the one-bedrooms go first because there are only a handful of them.

Confirm the current pet, parking and cancellation terms on the listing page when you book. Then check the zoo's own hours on the day you're going: they shift with the season, and a group that turns up at four-thirty in November is a group that doesn't get in.
