Greenville houses that fit a group of five to seven

The Liberty Bridge curving over the Reedy River falls at Falls Park in downtown Greenville, South Carolina, on a clear spring afternoon

For a group of four to seven, the Greenville homes worth starting with are the two-bedrooms that sleep five and the three-bedrooms that sleep seven. That's the whole shape of the answer. Five people fit in 2BR Retreat near Swamp Rabbit, Cozy Modern 2BR by Swamp Rabbit, Comfy 2BR Getaway near Downtown!, 2BR Heart of Downtown Greenville, Great 2BR right near downtown and The Greenville Grand Slam!. Seven fit in any of four three-bedroom houses. Twelve fit in either of the two five-bedrooms. Availability moves, so the sensible move is to pick the configuration first and check your dates against it.

Six ways to sleep five, and they are not interchangeable

The two-bedrooms all take five guests, which means the decision isn't about size. It's about which part of Greenville you want to wake up in.

Three of them sit near the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the rail trail that runs north from Greenville through Furman and on toward Travelers Rest. If your group has bikes on the back of the car, that proximity is the entire trip: you ride out in the morning, stop at Swamp Rabbit Café a couple of miles up from Falls Park, and keep going as far as the legs allow. Travelers Rest is about ten miles out, a comfortable hour of easy pedalling with coffee stops.

If the point of the weekend is Main Street, 2BR Heart of Downtown Greenville puts you where Falls Park is a walk rather than a drive. Mary's at Falls Cottage and Passerelle Bistro are both inside the park itself, so dinner can happen without anyone moving a car. The Greenville Grand Slam! is a short stroll from the baseball stadium, which decides it for anyone coming in for a Drive game. And Great 2BR right near downtown has a fire pit, which changes how a group spends the end of an evening in October.

When there are six or seven of you

Four three-bedroom houses take seven guests, and they're genuinely different buildings rather than variations on one plan.

3BR 2B with Fenced Back Yard has the fenced yard, which matters if a dog is coming. 3BR 2.5Bath with EV charger Near Cherrydale has a large fenced yard and a charger in the garage, the only sensible answer if someone in the group drives electric and doesn't fancy hunting for a public plug. Brand New 3BR Near Cherrydale & Furman Large Yard sits near Furman, where the Swamp Rabbit's long continuous stretch passes the campus and Swan Lake. And 3BR 2Bath near Bon Secours SF Hospital with Fence is the one to book when the trip is built around the hospital rather than around a holiday.

Two of those sit near Cherrydale, which is where people in Greenville actually do their shopping and eating when they aren't performing downtown. It's a useful base: close enough to Main Street for dinner, far enough that parking isn't a negotiation.

If your small group is bigger than you first said

Groups have a way of growing between the first message and the booking. Both five-bedroom homes sleep twelve. 5BR Spacious Retreat Near Swamp Rabbit &Cherrydale sits between the trail and Cherrydale shopping. 5BR 4B Huge Space with 2 Level Game Barn has four full bathrooms split two upstairs and two down, plus a two-storey heated and air-conditioned barn with ping pong, a TV and bean bag chairs. For a bachelor weekend or a family reunion where people need somewhere to go that isn't the living room, that barn does more work than any amount of square footage.

The kitchen question, which groups always get wrong

Groups book around bedrooms and then eat around a table, so look at the table. Every one of these homes has a real kitchen with a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, free parking and WiFi, which is what makes a week with six people survivable rather than an exercise in queueing. The coffee stations run a Keurig and a drip maker side by side, a small thing that stops the one person who wakes at six from waking everyone else.

Cook at least two nights. Greenville's restaurants are worth the detour, but a group of seven eating out twice a day is a different kind of holiday from the one most people are picturing when they rent a house.

Getting out of town

Paris Mountain State Park is just north of downtown, fifteen to twenty-five minutes depending on traffic, with hiking and biking trails and swimming at Lake Placid in season. Park entry is six dollars for an adult, less for children and South Carolina seniors, and it opens at eight and closes at sunset.

Table Rock State Park is further, up US 276 to SC 11 and then about seven miles along to the West Gate, roughly an hour out. The summit hike wants most of a day: five or six hours is what the park suggests. Wildcat Wayside, a mile-long loop with a waterfall right off Highway 11, is the version of that drive for a group that isn't feeling heroic.

Booking it

Tell us the dates and the headcount and we'll tell you what's actually open, including whether the home you've picked takes your dog, since every Greenville home here allows pets under its own terms. Booking direct puts you in touch with the people who look after the houses rather than a call centre, and every one of them has keypad entry, so arriving at eleven at night is nobody's problem.
